"My time in DC was transformational; I truly watched theory meld with experience." (Aryana)
"I went to the cherry blossoms this afternoon with Christine. It was peak season, 70 degrees, and sunny with clouds. Perfect weather and conditions. Then, we went to the district where I got ice cream and Christine got boba. During the sunset, Amelia and I went for a bike ride around the capitol and Washington Monument, which was gorgeous with the sun setting behind it." (Jasmine)
2022 Interns at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. "Had a very yummy blueberry pancake brunch (thanks Mr. Jordan!!). "Then, we walked to the National Museum of African American History & Culture, which I really enjoyed looking around in. Amelia and I walked to the Kennedy Center afterwards to see Griefcat on the Millenium Stage, which has free concerts Thurs-Sunday. I had fun and liked hearing them. For dinner, we walked by the river and stopped by this seafood place, where we got oysters." (Jasmine)
"I have been given more tasks that directly relate to the congresswoman’s work. On a couple of occasions I was given individuals who were to appear at hearings and asked to draft questions for the congresswoman to ask them. I also was asked to draft a one minute speech for the congresswoman to read pertaining to a bill in the House." (Malcolm)
"I left at 4 for the alumni event. It was nice to meet alumni and learn about what comes after Exeter in DC if we decide that we like it here and want to stay. We got their LinkedIns and/or business cards." (Kendrah)
"For lunch, I went to Longworth cafeteria and had sushi, which was pretty good. Later in the day, I went on a scavenger hunt with Kendrah, Aryana, and Christine, where we rode in the trams between the House and Senate Buildings and the Capitol." (Jasmine)
"When Cameron wrapped up some of his work, he started to deliver a fascinating and impassioned lecture on Kosovo. Leaving that day, I realized I would miss moments like that in this office." (Aryana)
"Becca asked me to do some research for the bill she had told me about—a messaging Bill to combat Florida's don't say gay bill. I had to look into all of the similar bills and provide notes on their basic objectives. I took a little too long to read through all the bills and sheepishly handed in my research (much more detailed than I needed) just before lunch, even though I promise to give it by the morning. However Becca seemed to love it and she even invited me to a meeting with Marissa from the district office this coming Monday. A bill I got to directly work on, not just research or write a memo for. I am beyond excited🙂." (Aryana)
"Being a day student, I was a little worried about having a roommate in DC. I knew I was living with Jasmine like I had hoped but I didn’t know her very well. My friendship with Jasmine was one of the best things to come out of my term in DC, and my only regret I have was that we hadn’t become so close until senior spring!" Amelia
"Not having homework at night was one of the best aspects of the trip. I’d get off work at 5pm and have the freedom to exercise, read a book, watch basketball, whatever the heart pleased, really. It was a great feeling to rush around during the day and then be able to de-stress completely at night, playing cards with other interns, catching up on our respective days. Many view the Washington trip as a surrender of the relaxation of your senior spring, but many times throughout the term I was grateful that I didn’t have a test to study for at 11pm or a project due the next day." (Ben)
"The seminars were one of the coolest aspects of the term in DC. We got the chance to see the vast array of fields that Exeter alumni had found their way into, whether that was on Capitol Hill, in lobbying, national security, consulting, journalism, think tanks, and so much more. Our office jobs were so focused on what happened on Capitol Hill; these seminars expanded what we understood to be DC beyond just the government offices. It’s a whole range of professions that make up the political and cultural landscape of the city." (Ben)
"There has been no other time in my life that I talked to more strangers than this past spring. In a strange way, all of the coffees with staffers and emails to alums much older than me have been reassuring. They tell me that I am on the right path." (Sabrina)
"Christine and I were selected to be volunteers for the White House Easter Egg hunt next Monday!" (Jasmine)
"For dinner, Amelia and I went to a rooftop taco place and got good taco tuesday tacos. When we came back, we went to the protest at the Supreme Court." (Jasmine)
"Today, I went through voicemails and called back constituents who were asking for help on issues such as immigration and green cards. I was also featured on AOC’s Instagram story which was quite a big feat, since she has 8 million followers."
...Then, I was able to staff AOC at a press conference, where she spoke with a few other members about a bill to prevent congressional and senate members from buying and trading stocks. This was super fun, because I got to follow her around from the presser to the house floor to vote and back to the office. I also saw LOTS of other congress people which was super cool. Then, Amelia and I went to watch KBJ’s final supreme court confirmation with the Senate." (Jasmine)
"The baseball game was a great way to bring a close to our trip. Even though it was much hotter than we were used to from our time in New Hampshire, we got great seats that made the experience memorable. We also had an extra ticket with us and decided to bring along Ephram, one of the staff from the hotel who carefully and diligently laid out the breakfast options each morning for us. It was great to talk to him outside of the hotel and give him a much needed break from his job. We talked Michael Jordan, the Nationals, movies, and so much more." (Ben)
