Revise and add any work experience from this summer. You don't have to wait until the summer is over. If you've lost track of the resume samples I gave you, email me and I'll send them to you again.
Deadlines: To get feedback from me (highly recommended) get it to me by the first week in August (sooner is better); Final draft: Sept. 1. The final draft should be ONE PAGE, in the form of a PDF with a file name that is just your name and the word resume. Like this: William.Jordan.Resume.pdf. The rough drafts can be in Word or Google doc, formats easier to give feedback on.
Write a cover letter template that can be modified for each office you apply to. Each cover letter will include some of the same basic information that you want to highlight about your self—perhaps to emphasize important information on your resume.
BONUS: You can also check out the placement spreadsheet and start doing some research on the offices you plan to apply to. You’ll want a paragraph saying something about why you want to work for that MOC (member of Congress). It’s also helpful when you interview to know something about the MOC and about his or her district. You should also have samples of these from me.
You might also sign up for the House of Representatives Vacancy Announcement Bulletin HERE. Scroll down to the House Employment Bulletin heading and click on the "subscribe" button. You'll get a weekly email with a list of upcoming openings. It's too early for spring positions to be posted, but reading the job descriptions will give you a sense of the kinds of things offices are looking for. Don't be intimidated by that--it's their wish list. You can also submit your resume, after it's done, to the resume bank from this page. Senate jobs are listed HERE.
WIP '26 Start date: Sunday, March 22. You should arrive at the hotel (200 C Street SE) before 5:00 and be ready for work the next day. We will go out to dinner as a group in the evening and I will give you a tour of the neighborhood.
End Date: Friday May 29. This is your last day of work and you may depart as early as that evening. Most interns leave on Saturday and return home for a few days before going back to Exeter. The school does not let WIP interns return to campus until Wednesday before graduation, June 3 in 2026. Students unable to return home may check out of the hotel on that date.
